Cool Caddyrages Mk1 golf gti

Been after a mk1 golf gti non sunroof model for a while now and as i sold my caddyvan tdi last saturday, it gave me a bigger budget to buy one. Well once i could find a decent non sunroof model anyway lol.

This one came up on my local forum in the end. After a few days, we came to agreement on the price and i picked this up last night. Ran out of fuel 3 odd miles from home but i got back in the end.

Failed to start this morning, suspected WUR so left it til later. Tried again when warmer but no luck so i stuck a fresh can of fuel in. Battery had died after so many times turning it over though. Its re-charging now.

Kind of hoping its not sucked up sh1t from the tank as i know mk1's are common for rusting inside out. Hopefully update later with it starting.

I'll let the pic's do the talking

I know too well about the rotten arches on mk1 gti's but think these are pretty good for the age. The fronts look fine but the rears look like this

Think i'll leave the arch spats on for now lol

rear valance

The front panel and wings are very good, as is round the windows.

Its basically bog standard other than its been lowered on weitec springs and adjustable damping shocks, obviously it wont stay like this for long haha.

Got a good few things to sort for its MOT but otherwise i very happy with it.

Already started doing a few things which i'll probs update again later

Hope you likey

Couple of pic's as to how i left it today

Removed bumpers, grill, headlights(1 needed replacing anyway), stickers and then washed it.

Once battery recharged, i tried to start but no go. Checked fuel infeed pipe to metering head and theres nothing so looks like crap in tank syndrome. Had a look underneath at the pump and it seems someones already done the inline filter between tank and pump safety thing. Filter looks proper dirty so i'll replace that and see how i get on tommorrow.

yeah gti's are common for rotten arches mate, they'll be bad no doubt when i decide to take the spats off. Not the worst i seen though.

Good stuff about the truck mate, i been taking mine to bits so gimme a sout if you need parts or a hand

Yeah, cant keep them all. I did love the van though, brilliant tool. Always wanted a mk1 golf though so it had to make way.

Its the trucks fault that i let the van go. The truck was soo much fun being valver powered, then when i sorn'd it, i was left with the not so fun tdi.

Least i now have a pocket rocket gti to keep me smiling

Mileage is 126k although i unsure if they the original clocks as i was given another set with the car. I'll check what they read tommorrow

She's back up and running again

As i had the car up to remove the dirty filter next to the pump, i noticed that whoever did it, placed the fuel pump in the cradle the wrong way so they'd have more pipe to play with and fit the filter.

Now its all well and good placing a filter before the pump but they did'nt think of the excess pipe going to the accumilator, its been rubbing on the axle
Anyway, i removed fuel from tank, refitted the pump the correct way and used a pipe to go direct from tank to pump just like it left the factory.

Couple of turns on the key and she fires up woohoo!

Also refitted the bumpers, headlights and grill and then turned my attention to the dash electric's

Bought the car with no clock lights, after removing, i could see why!, there was no bulbs in it haha. I just replaced the clocks with a set i got with the car in the end as it looked in much better condition and read only 1k more than those i took out.

I just need to work out what wiring goes to which guage now and that should be it apart from fitting some tunes.

Its now booked in for its MOT at 9am saturday so i intend to get the little niggles sorted by then.

Well i going to order coilovers tommorrow if it goes through the MOT fine. Last thing i want is to spend money on goodies then find out all the brake and fuel lines are too corroded. You never know what the tester will be like hey.
I'll fit the rims i have once i get the coilovers on

Think i quite lucky with the bodywork tbh mate, its only the rear arch sections that look bad as far as i can see. I'll leave the arches on til i ready to cut the rot out and weld in repair sections. Obviously roll them while i at it.

The rest of the bodywork looks very good
