Thread: Forum closure

  1. #1

    Forum closure

As no one is hardly using the forum and I have to come on here everyday to delete spam & porn threads I have made the decision to close the forum once and for all.

Although I do get a small amount of funding from some individuals, it is no where near enough to justify keeping it going

I have asked the hosting company to close my account on 06/07/2020

    So that will be it.

Sad, sad times FB just ain't the same. This sounds a little more final than the last closure.
Farewell to you all - you'll be missed.

Yes this is final this time, I have instructed the hosting company to terminate my account on the 6th July so that im not billed again.

This post also proves a point. Its been on here 6 hrs and you are the only one to reply Mick and the thread has had 12 views, so that's 11 people who couldn't give a fuck as they are just he to take info and not get involved.

It is sad as I have personally paid for this forum to remain online for the last 17 years, people have got what they want from it and now fucked off to FB. They will be the first to moan when its gone, but im done with it now.

This is the end of an era

Sad news Al, I’ve been away from my caddy for a while now and have just started to work on it again.
Am not on FB so will miss reading these pages.
I’m assuming the shop web site will remain open?

I had a quick look last night. As it was so late I couldn’t think of anything to post.
It is the end of an era, I admit. I haven’t been posting much on here for the past year or so as we’ve been moving houses. From one decent place to an overpriced sh1thole, to another affordable sh1thole with no garden etc.

How much are the yearly subscriptions costing? Wouldn’t it be a better idea to start a member payment area?
Basic sh1t for the non paying noobs and an advanced elitist zone for the payers?

Yes I’m on FB as there’s more to life than just caddys/cars. But I still have a browse on here most days.

Off the top of my head its around £800 + a year for the hosting, backups, domain, licence & the cost of any works. Most of the cost is because we have a HUGE 17 y/o database!

Members wont pay George, people dont even come on here when its free!

Sadly keeping the forum open is like floggin a dead horse, things have moved on for the worse IMO. Its been in real decline for the last three years or so and I think I have kept it going for sentimental reasons, but how long do I keep that up for??? Its never really been about the cost for me so long as the site had some value and people were using it frequently, but north of 800 quid a year for very little use is just not worth it

Its not been an easy decision but we all have to move on

    Long time Mike!

The online shop will remain open as normal. Unfortunately I still have a large mortgage, so that side of things will continue

As it stands I have setup 2 Facebook groups (which I personally hate), but if you want to find them you can on the following links

    General Caddy Forum Page https://www.facebook.com/groups/vwcaddyforum

    And our MK1 Page https://www.facebook.com/groups/MK1C...onConversions/

Any chance of adding the how to sections to the facebook page? theres a section at the very top of the page for files which seem permanent.

It's a shame - been a great forum with decent people. My use has dropped right off as don't really play with cars too much nowadays. My standard 2K work van (apart from remap) isn't really worth talking about... I'm still not on Facebook. Can't bring myself to jump into that shithole....
All the best and thanks for keeping it running so long.

Thanks for keeping it going as long as you have Al...
No other format will beat a forum unfortunately.
I can't imagine how many projects have been completed and problems solved that's to this forum and community.
    Farewell all.

It’s a total shame, you just can’t beat forums for reference. Sad to see it go, I’ve met some good people through here. Guess I’ll have to join the FB group

Ah man, forums are definitely not what they used to be. I’ve met some good friends through the caddy forum though and my caddy is certainly a lot better than it would have been had I not had the forum for advice over the years! Thanks Al

Massive shame, I have regularly checked in on this forum for the last ten years however I don’t really tend to post very often as i’m shit at typing. This forum was a huge help for me when I started work on my mk1 back in 2010, it probably wouldn’t have got finished without this forum. I don’t use facebook, instagrim or whatever the others are called so will loose a valuable resource in a few days ☹️ There used to be so many regulars on here that there would be pages and pages of new posts if you didn’t check in for a few days. Are they all on that Facebook rubbish looking at pictures of what someone cooked for tea?

Anyway, its been great and thank you all, massive thanks to Al for funding this for the last 17 years. It will be sadly missed

It'll be sad to see it go, alas it's time has come...

Thanks for your support over the years, I think I can safely say without this forum my caddy would still be in a million pieces in the shed!

Hopefully there is some chance of a caddy camping event towards the end of the summer, even if it isn't at Santa Pod.

Al, as others have already said thank you for the forum, its this place after a random google search inspired me to buy a mk1 back in 2008 and then the mk2 van which followed. The information the inspiration and the people here made all that possible so thank you to you all too.

Although I havent owned a caddy for along time I've still popped in from time to time to catch up on other peoples builds but I suppose because of this and the lack of posts I've created, I've contributed to the decline.

Harry, you may have more posts but my thread was better
Rich, you should of bought my borbets
    Mitty, paint your door
If i knew id be this thirsty this morning i would of drunk more last night
