I was a bit unsure on it until it was painted but I think it'll look pretty good once done. It's standard vw imola yellow.

Still having issues with starting this thing. I've stolen my old dears laptop to run vagcom. Checked the iq and it was at 8.6. Did the hammer mod and got it down to around 3.5 and made the starting no different but get lots of black smoke.
I thought I'd try adjusting the timing on the pump, advanced it a little and it starts after about 5 secs of turning over but then I have not alot of power and the revs feel really lazy, Retard it slightly and it won't start.

Hi,I'd check the woodruff key on the crank pulley ,there known to wear (a friend had similar issue ) and will cause weird timing issues.

Not much to report. Bought a pd130 intake pipe earlier from a lad up the road. Just needs the rubber pipe to connect to the turbo. Anyone know if the alh is the same??

Mitty popped over on sat and took a pic of the smoke and it also very dirty again.

The actual turbo inlet is the same as the alh ( im still running my alh intake pipe with a 150 pd turbo, next on my list to change) the actual pd intake pipe is larger so you need the pd rubber. Also as far as i know the alloy pipe was 150 pd fit.

Ah guess it's a pd150 then. I'll maybe just get some silicone joiners and do it that way.
I'll probs keep the red pipe incase I do put a pd150 turbo on. They seem quite hard to come by at decent money. Considering I paid £20 for both pipes.

Got a few hours out on the van this afternoon. Finally got the new alternator fitted so should have full charge on the battery from now on.
To get to the alternator as it's sandwiched between the power steering and aircon pumps I had to remove the front end. The radiator had been bodged in before with cable ties so as soon as I loosened the slam panel the aircon rad and coolant rad smacked the floor, resulting in the aircon rad splitting the bottom fitting and pissing green fluid and gas out all over.
The coolant rad needs replacing anyway as noticed the other week it's weeping slightly from the lower lh corner so going to keep a eye out for a ibiza setup so it'll at least fit how it should.
Whilst I had the front end off I thought it'd be rude not to fit the cupra front. I know it's been done loads but I much prefer it.
Got to cable tie my rad up in the morning and sort the panel gaps in the morning and then look at fitting the solid rear doors. It'll then be getting ready to paint the rest of the van.

Retarded timing will give the symptoms you describe - reluctant starting and lazy running, retarding it further from here would cause it not to start. Might want advancing further....

Tried to measure live timing on vagcom? What's the duty cycle at?

Does starting improve with a warm engine?

Thanks reg. I've been fiddling about and think I have the timing somewhere near. I tried downloading vagcom from ross tech to get the tdi timing graph but it wouldn't work. Need to have another play about and see what I can sort out.
It makes not much difference on a warm engine. If anything it starts a little better when cold.
This is what I got last time I had it connected on vagcom.

Been using and abusing the van as normal.
This morning on the way to work had a quite bad misfire, couldn't rev above 2k rpm. Got to work opened the bonnet and could see all this orange flame coloured stuff from no1 cylinder.
Thought it was dead so searched for a new engine as I thought when it cooled it probably wouldn't start. Tried it at dinner and it started. No misfire when cold so left it to warm up and nipped to the shop. Soon as underlay misfired again with the weird orange ignited stuff.
Got home from work and started ripping it all to pieces. Turns out there's not much left of the exhaust gasket on no1 cylinder. Hopefully this is what's causing the misfire.
Ordered some new gaskets couple of silicone reducers so I can fit the pd150 turbo inlet and inlet manifold and the stainless downpipe from tontoe when I put it back together.
Misses is taking me away for a few days as a suprise 30th present so it'll sit on the drive until I'm back.

Caddy has been parked up for a few weeks now. Bought a cheap runaround to do the daily duties for a while.
Got plenty planned while its off the road. Finally got a mk4 pd inlet mainifold as i had a passat one which a lad local to me wanted to swap. Bought some .250 nozzles which ive dropped off today at a specialist to get setup. If that doesnt sort my starting issue i have a new pump to be fitted.
Mitty has ordered me some parts to make a stainless manifold which ill collect and fab up when ive bought a turbo. Think im going for a gt2052v from a 2.5tdi audi.
Had a bad misfire just before i parked it up which turned out to be the t piece on top of the filter, ordered a new one which didnt sort it. Ended up buying the filter housing from a new shape caddy and fitted that. It gets rid of the stupid orings on the filter.

Ive also got the black dash from tontoe which is going to be fitted along with a boost and egt gauge somewhere, will also get the van over to work and get it all painted.
Not taken any pics of anything as its all pretty boring stuff, but spotted this caddy earlier so as everyone likes a pic ill put it up.

Progress is being made. Got the van over to work to start getting it all one colour. Got lots of rust spots on the roof that need to be dealt with but overall not too bad.

Got a layer of anti corrosion epoxy primer on the van last night. Went in this morning and gave the roof it's top coat. Will leave it to go off then flat and paint the body next week.

Also picked my injectors up with the .250 nozzles fitted. Was chatting to him about a larger pump head. He said he has loads of pumps Sat around for spares so if I take mine in he will see if he has a larger head to go on it.
