    BMW E30 Project

Got myself an E30 as a small rolling project and daily. Still have my mk1 caddy but I wanted something in-between a boring newer car and a farmers truck!

Will stick the project thread up here as the E30 forum just doesn't seem like the kind of place for me.

    Spec so far:
    • Engine swap, now with an M50 2.5L Straight 6 installed from an E36
    • Lowered
    • Frankenstein exhaust; once a straight through exhaust now with silencers added.
    • Otherwise it's standard, needs some trim reattached but in good all round and honest condition

    Minor plans: (for now :P)
    • De-chav it, loose the wheels for something more standard / BBS like
    • Reattach the trim and full valet so clean and tidy inside
    • Raise it slightly on some coilovers so practical and get it looking right
    • Replace the frankenstein exhaust for a stainless one set up to be fairly subtle sounding until it's opened up
    • Few wiring bits to tidy up
    • Full service
    • Tracking

    Few pics from the sale:

    Surely you mean "straight 6"

If you ever decide to V8 it with an M60, M62 or S62

    Or and older M30 3.5 Straight 6

Talk to me as I can supply you engine mounts

You're going to need to educate me!....

Will bear it in mind if I decide to change the engine.

For those others that also didn't know:

A V6 has two cylinder heads, each with 3 cylinders, connected by a single crankshaft, opposed normally at 60°. The pistons operate in a V formation.
A straight six has a single cylinder head with the six pistons all inline over a single crankshaft.

I miss my old 535, not ideal for work but got there in comfort and in record time.

E30's will certainly be a future classic if 02's & E21's are anything to go by

I was looking at tourings as well, this ticked more boxes than any else that came up though.

It was originally a 325i Auto.

Engine changes are tempting, but trying not to let the plans run away with me for now. I still have the caddy for that!

A boring update, but it's getting some love as seems the last owner neglected the basics. Cars been in for a full service and check over and few bits picked up and sorted.

It has a PAS rack from an E36, and the pipe was abused at install so that's been replaced so there's no kink now:

Rear pad was pants so the pair have been replaced:

Coilovers are being fitted. Fitting the rears discovered some roapy top mounts so they have been replaced:

Check out how bad the exhaust is... shocking workmanship!

No pics of the coilovers at the moment. Will update later.

I had an E30 325i sport and an E30 m3 evo.....both were brilliant and wish I still had them both. If M3s were not silly money I would do a right hand drive conversion with a 135i twin turbo engine or v8 swap.

Just looked on eBay to see how much the v8's go for. M60 is only £400 odd quid?!

Guess it'll be the downpipe and other ancilsries that will cost all the money though.

Few pics of the coilover install - differernt setup to what I am familiar with. I went for the VMaxx setup after being hahappy with their coilivers on my caddy.

    Rear:

    Front:

    (Screws in to strut)

The front shocks were leaking so this justified my spend

Oh and the steering rack has been refurbished as it was leaking fluid too.

What's the deal with the twin exhaust? Beemers quite often have that don't they?

Where did you get your rack refurbed?

Yea a twin exhaust is standard, not sure what the reasons are? When I got a quote for a stainless one they recommended a single bore.

Rack was arranged by my mate at his garage. He used a local company called steering direct that do racks and pump reburbs.
