leaking injector... fuel will burn off when dripping down on cylinder head and then the fumes will come in through the heater...

Any fluid leak (coolant/oil/diesel) hitting a hot surface will stink

Having the scuttle pan removed makes it worse.

I've only had my caddy a few weeks, and have smelt the fumes on and of it's a 1987 1.6 petrol. I've taken it to a few mechanics and they can't seem to find what's wrong with it. I think it happens more when I've been in it for a while and the engine is hot, gives me a head ache and makes me feel sick. It's had alot of work done on it b4 I had it.

Maybe check for holes in the floor pan and fire wall, that may let fumes leak into your cab.

anything from leaking fluids to greasy fingerprints on the exhaust manifold can make things smell, get the engine hot and look under the bonnet for smoke....

Thanks for the advice, i dont know much about engines but will pop the bonnet and cheeck for smoke. Will probably take it back to the garage and get them to check it again i just dont want to get ripped off.

the thing is if the engine itself is dirty/greasy it can be smelly, i have had some old dogs in the past that have had all sorts of gunk and grime on the engine and they smell....

MLVB has a point. Depending on how dirty your engine is or isn't you might want to get some degreaser and pressure wash it. Even if its not to dirty.

Yah you never know there might be something that you haven't seen causing the problem, maybe.

could also be the exhaust manifold blowing when its hot, try letting the engine get hot and block the exhaust with your foot (putting some cloth over it helps) and get someone to see if they can hear any gas escaping under the bonnet.... be careful when you release your foot, as tons of muck will shoot out of the exhaust when you release the pressure...
