Any 4cyl VW gearbox will fit with the associated flywheel/clutch.

If you can't use the original box then a mk3 16v gearbox/flywheel with VR6 clutch is supposed to be a good bet.

A tricky question to categorise, it's both engine and gearbox related.

I'm fairly sure it can - I think a couple of folk here have, but it's not really ideal from what I remember - E.g. good acceleration but runs outta revs too quick!

I *think* umpderdunk has the first 4 gears GTI and 5th from a diesel to get best of both

Does anyone know what gearboxes the RA/SB 1.6TD engines came with? And whether they are 020 or 02A?

    They were in 88-93 B3 passats, 89-91 Golfs/Jettas.

    Both I think!!!

Passat will have 02A and golf/jetta will be 020.

    020 gearbox

    Here's an 020 box

What ever the code there are very little external differences. You'll see in the picture that this box has a 2 pin reverse light contact. Some boxes have a larger electrical connection for the later MFA 'driving computer' system. This is a 2Y code from a mk2 gti 16v. This box has 100mm outputs.

A very easy way to see the difference between a 4 and 5 speed is the 5 speed will have the 'green' end cap..... the 4 speed has a square alloy end plate.

    How much oil ?

Just like your engine, your gearbox needs oil too but with the gearboxes we have there is no easy way to tell the oil level. So.... the only sure way is to drain the box completely and then re-fill

    Capacities are

    4 speed 1.5 litres
    5 speed 2.0 litres

020 4T (at least for the golfs) 90mm driveshafts
some passats had the 020A (cable shift) and some had the 020

    I've got a question -

"How do i solve a sticky first gear?"

[edit - does the standard mk1 4 speed box have a synchromesh for 1st?]

    and maybe a useful tip

suddenly find no reverse gear or first gear? - check the smaller linkage in the engine bay on top of the gearbox as the clips on ball-joint cup holders on mine wore out, if you clip it back on with a fresh linkage thingy it all works again fine

In America, you may also find this referenced as a "Triple-square".

Here is one place that sells them as a set.

Clutch compatibility AAZ TD with Scirocco box

    Hi

I'm having a AAZ TD lump fitted to my MK1 next week.

Does anyone know if my MK1 Gti 200mm clutch will fit the flywheel on the 1.9 TD?

We've not removed the TD gearbox yet to fit my scirocco 4+E box and drive shafts, but spec sheets on the TD are saying it uses a 210mm clutch.
Will this cause me any problems or is it a straight fit?
Does the 10mm difference make all the difference?

    Cheers

Fairly sure the AAz has an 02A gearbox and the scirocco one will be 020 so it's not going to fit.

If you want the scirocco box you'll have to fit the scirocco flywheel too

Hi, need a bit of help please?

I've read the stuff baove and just need some clarification.
I had the gearbox reconn'd last year, and its had to go back as the diff has slack, I'm outsside of the guaratee, but now I'm told the driveshafts are wearing the housing. I kinda wonder if this should have been picked up by the gearbox people before taking the cash, but hey this is where I am at.

Its a 5 spead box (he said it was a very very early one) I read this quote above:

"Q: I've fitted an 020 5speed gearbox and now my driveshafts don't fit, what's going on?
A: You may have an 020 with 100mm output cups/flanges. These were fitted to later mk2 golfs and mk1 carbios, these were never std fitment on caddys.
See 100mm Vs 90mm for more info "

Have checked the 90 vs 100mm and I'm none the wiser.

What do I do? What gearbox do I need.
Its a diesel if that makes any difference?

    Thanks in adv

(Aethel's gone, the old blue jalopy '89 wants to be as beautiful in the long run....)

Here's a good question for you!

Will a Golf MK1 3 speed AUTOMATIC box run OK with my AAZ Caddy MK1? :-)
