    Engine FAQ Suggestion thread

    Right peeps

We're all agreed that well formed FAQs will help everyone out. Making it easy for the newbies to find the answers and less repetitive for the old codgers, I mean old hands amoungst us

So can we please have suggestions fo the questions often asked listed in this thread.

I want questions ONLY to start off with. Once we have those we can go about answering them and linking in the good content lurking in the depth of the caddyforum!

This is not a discussion forum, please don't post about how a good an idea FAQs are. Just well formed, popular, high level questions of an engine nature please. I've put a few below to get us started.

    Cheers

    Q: What engines fit?
    A:
Most 4 cyl engines 1.6 or larger from Mk1 / Mk2 / Mk3 Golfs will bolt in using the right Mk1 Golf mounts and require no modification to get them physically into your truck. Physically placing the engine is only half the battle though. Full answers click here

Q: Can I fit a petrol engine in my diesel caddy?
A: Yes you can, see Which diesel engines fit FAQ for more details. Also see Fuel system FAQs for advice on tanks and fuel lines

    Q. How do I change fuel lines and pump for a Gti conversion?

    Q. What exhaust will fit my replacement engine?

    Q. How do I install and set up my diesel pump?

    Q. What special tools do I need to replace the timing belt on my caddy?

    Q. How do I convert to a Weber 32/34?

Q: What is an engine code & where do I find mine?

    Q:Which petrol engines fit?
A: First lets define the term fit. FIT in this instance means the engine block will bolt in using std Mk1 engine mounts with zero chassis modifications.
This has been split into engine architecture and engine code to hopefully make it easier to read.

Popular: yes, Well formed: yes, High level: yes, About engines: no!

Will move that over to the gearbox FAQ although it could still have a place in the engine FAQ for the newbies that don't realise the gearbox and engine should be discussed separately

how specific do you want to go? Like: Does a GTD pump fit on a AAZ?
Can an AAZ head fit a 1.6TD block? and so on ...

I want to keep them high level to start with.
once we have a good base then we can do other FAQs like Diesel pumps and interchangable parts etc.
Those might be better off as how tos though

Perhaps a list of engine codes, and bhp etc figures would be good for engines, used for conversions

Right What I'm thinking of for a format is one or two lines max for the short answer and then a link to a post further down the thread with the full answer and content rich links.

So please feel free to answer the questions already posed and I'll format the 2nd post to suit.

    thanks

    Q: What engines fit?

A: Most 4 cyl engines 1.6 or larger from Mk1 / Mk2 / Mk3 Golfs will bolt in using the right Mk1 Golf mounts and require no modification to get them physically into your truck.
This also applies to 4cylinder engines from most VAG cars from similar desgin eras. eg Passats, Corrados, Jettas, Audi 80s, SEATs
    To check specifics regarding fitting your engine try searching on the engine code. See what is an engine code FAQ. {link to FAQ}

There are exceptions to this rule, a G60 engine doesn't bolt straight in although the custom mount you need is easy to fabricate if you can weld.

Don't forget with enough time/money/passion/skill/luck?/determination anything can be made to fit. Also some off the shelf mounts are available to allow later Mk4 engines to be fitted. 1.8Turbos for example.

With any engine conversion once you have it physically mounted you still have to think about the following:

Fuel management, be it carbs or injection
Spark management, (petrol only) mechanical dizzy or ECU controlled
Exhaust, due to the lack of space the choice of manifold/downpipe can be very limited for a Mk1

    Q:Which petrol engines fit?

A: First lets define the term fit. "Fit" in this instance means the engine block will bolt in using std Mk1 engine mounts with zero chassis modifications.
The Mk1 caddy engine bay is the same as a Mk1 Golf engine bay. The Golf came with either small block(1.1 & 1.3) or big block (1.5,1.6,1.8 & diesel) engine mounts. All Mk1 Caddys have big block engine mounts from the factory.

This list been split into engine architecture and engine code to hopefully make it easier to read.

8 Valve engines. These are probably the easiest to use as VW have done all the work with the Mk1 GTi and there's loads of aftermarket parts available to help with your conversion.
