up to TDC on crank (flywheel mark)
fit DTI gauge preloading the needle about 2mm
turn crank backwards about 1/16 - 1/8 of a turn and watch DTI
DTI should go back about 1mm ish then stop moving
zero the reading on the DTI
bring crank back up to TDC
what you read on the gauge is your timing setting or 'lift'
think it should be 0.9 or 0.95 on an AAZ
adjust pump pulley to get it right.
turn the motor over a couple of times and recheck.

You need to use the TDC mark on the flywheel, not on the injection pump.

There should be a cover you can look through. See the blue circle on this photo.

I'm running the old non-turbo 1.6 liter engine.

According to my Bentley Manual, there were two ranges of timing:

There was "normal" and "improved performance".

The "improved performance" had slightly more needle travel on the indicator, which I believe means a couple of extra degrees of timing advance BTDC.

According to this chart, NOx increases slightly with advancing the timing, but most other factors are improved including a decrease in Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC)

I am kind of rough on my idle so I may play around with it a little more.

    Oh, one last hint...
The third bolt holding the injection pump on is accessed from the timing belt side of the engine. I had half the engine taken apart and was cursing everything VW before I realized this.

Clifford, the NA 16 and the TD16 and some early AAZ engines are all different to this AAZ pump.

They mount up different and they time up different.

you get two different (common) types of DTI - Finger and Plunger

Finger type are more acurate, but u only get a limited amout of travel (around 5mm) where as plunger type can have around 30mm travel with the same size DTI

Mr Baxters prices are a bit excessive. £17 for a locking bar!

I paid less than £30 for my second hand DTI and adaptors via ebay UK

I bout it from USA, @ £33 delivered including the adaptor.

Then lovely customs gave me a nice £13 charge when it arrived!!

So it was nearly a bargain.
