try the vw dealership first and if they cant get it then try about any car parts store or perforance shop. u can get a locking cap if you want one. with todays fuel prices i would recomend an locking cap. but hey thats just my opinion.

I just visited Stant (http://stant.com) and emailed them for application specific part numbers for the 1982 Rabbit Pickup Diesel. When I get the results I'll post here. I have an OEM diesel fuel cap with key but it does not seem to have any kind of sealing properties. So I'm ready for a replacment.

My 81 diesel's was missing when I bought it. While browsing around a junkyard I grabbed a couple (very cheap) that looked like they might work. I got some from later model VW's and they didn't fit at all. One somehow caught my eye on an '89 Jaguar XJ6. I almost didn't get it at the last minute but it turned out to fit and work just fine. Likely there are others out there that will too.

Not sure if US filler necks are same as Euro, but I got a locking cap from a scrapyard Scirocco and it was a perfect fit. My Caddy is a '92 and the rocco was about '88 IIRC.
Cheers,
Mark.

I went to the dealer, they said no can do. SO I guess I'll try to borrow one and go to the wrecking yard and see what else fits.
Thanks

Just wondering if someone has found a locking cap that fits the pickup. I was thinking of going this route to try and deter those who would try and suck me dry. :p Of course if someone really wanted it I'm sure they could figure out how to cut the fuel line under the pickup and drain it into whatever. That or just run me into the ditch road warrior style and steal my fuel. Return to thunderdome. :0

I have an original VW fuel cap from 1982. I'm thinking of finding a place that will remove and replace the rubber seal. The rubber seal on it now is as hard as rock. It doesn't seam to really seal.

Hey vwabbitman,
I just checked with my parts guy and I guess he can't get locking or normal fuel caps for the pickups. He thought that the dealers might have the regular caps for $60. :( Any chance you know what kind of locking cap you have- any part #'s etc?
Apparently I need to be more worried about someone swiping my fuel cap than the fuel. :D

dont pay $60 for a regular i can get one for $12 at my local parts store where i bought my locking one four years ago. i went in today to ask about the locking ones and it took three guys about 15 minutes of looking and arguing to tell me that they cant get it. but if you want the non locking i can get it. for a small finders fee of course. :D :thumbs_up

its acctually a late rabbit gas cap for a diesel. i dont know if there is a difference in the gas or diesel fuel caps but thats what fits the caddy. i dont think the caddy is the screw on cap i think they all are the tab ones. atleast both my caddys are the tab ones. but i will get the part number off the locking one that is on my caddy in to morning for you. :thumbs_up

Caddy gas cap are not scrued in (for all that I've seen)
I've bought a gas one (Rabbit) for my diesel, but I think some others fits try a junkyard ? Maybe fiat, Ford fits ?
You can put any gas cap on a diesel, but not on a gas one.
Some diesel gas cap are not vented, and gas are praticly always but you'd better chech that
