I have a caddy 1.6 1995 that has never had a working petrol guage from the day that it was purchased. The vehicle was returned approx 10 times to the agents who never successfully sorted out the problem. The problem could also be linked to the fact that a vacuum appears to build up in the tank after running at times causing petrol starvation at the carb. I removed the cover around the petrol cap the other day and discovered an inline valve in what I assume is the excess fuel return line behind the bodywork. This valve was in a rubber holder on a metal tang on the bodywork. It looked as though the rubber mounting was incorrectly mounted in an inverted position on the tang so I tried reversing the direction. The nett affect was that now I ended up with a positive pressure building in the tank after running the vehicle. I then assumed that the valve was perhaps correctly orientated but incorrectly installed in the rubber mounting so I returned it to its original orientation.
Any suggestions would be most welcome ??

On my diesel that valve has the black end up. Otherwise I don't have an answer except maybe the valve is defective or maybe a line is misrouted. Is it gas or diesel?
