I've got a 1.6 petrol caddy, and a on a recent tip to Santa pod for the Gti festival it only managed 25 mpg from Cardiff and back. It's got a five speed box fitted, had a krypton tune two weeks before and had the waxstat changed the same time. Would a webber conv give me better mpg? or are they all so thirsty. What do other 1.6 petrols do?

Go for the Weber conversion.

Its much more economical.
It goes better and it soudns better!!!

Also, it will not alter your insurance as its a direct replacement.

Sounds very weird, mine was originally a 4 speeder and it did loads to the Gallon.

Normally a Webber conversion would use more but obviously if the carb is the current problem then you may get a cure.

Are you sure it runs well and that there are no leaks???

How fast were you going?

Dont forget that at high speed the tailgate causes a lot of drag but mine wasnt thirsty doing 80 mph in 4th???

Usually when I have poor fuel mileage, I just drop a nice cozy diesel engine in. I got 46MPG in the Sportruck at one time.

I’ve tried looking for a leak but couldn’t find anything. I was doing between 70 and 80 on the motorway, so the drag might explain why I seem to get a little better mpg driving locally. would a Webber from a mk2 1.6 golf fit on the caddy? as the are a couple for sale on Ebay.

im with you garry. i haul wet insulation ragualarly in the bed of my truck(shell on also) and i am averaging 40mpg with a leaky injector and fuel line. if you are wondering why I haul wet insulation regulary i work for a fire, water and storm damage company(a member of disaster kleenup international). when somebody has a water leak at their house i end up being the one under the house pulling the wet insulation while they are in the house doing other stuff.

My response contradicts Paulos with regards to Fuel consumption...I think I am right in saying that he has used the conversion so I would go with his answer, I was basing my response on the Webbers I had on a Kit car but they were twin 40's and were V Bad!

The pierburg carb is better than a webber when set up properly although they are not easy.
1st check the earth lead and other wires, these cause most probs.

Recheck your timing as well, mine was a 4sp with a pit carb, when i bougt it it would only do 25mpg and had lots of problems manily due to the but the timing being a mile out, on a run from Stratford to Stanstead it would do 35mpg at a constant 70-80.

Yo dude, that's nuts! I hate dry insulation, I couldn't imagine the wet stuff. Do they reimburse you for the wear and tear on your truck?
