On a caddy with a 1.8gti engine, where is the fuel pump located?

is there one in the tank and one up front somewhere or just the one in the tank?

My caddy has a 1.8GTi engine in it that has been converted to use a carb and fuel pump (i am guessing its the lump hanging over the block from the rocker cover) setup from a driver see pic

http://www.c4ppy.net/caddyengine.jpg

What I want to do is, either refit the injection system, or fit dual dcoe carbs.

I have all the bits i need for either route except suitable fuel pumps.

What I need to know.. is what pump to use, where to locate it, and how to plumb it in for both setups.

Currently favouring the carbs with a carter 4070 high flow fuel pump. The caddy is just a fun car so not really bothered about the economy etc.. just want different. How do I deal with the fuel return pipe.. what do I do with the pipes I have etc.

Cheers

Amit.

the parts you refer to in the pic is the fuel regulator, all vw carb engines have them.

Deciding on carbs or K-jet (or even digifant) would have to be your first choice, then go from there, because all setups are different.

1. Carbs would be the easiest option as there is no wiring involved, but tuning them brings its own problems

2. K-Jet, is an easy swap but I would recomend getting a whole doner car, best to keep to a MK1 chassised car to make it a little easier (Either MK1 Gti, Cabrio or a FI scirocco)

3. Digifant, again get the whole doner car as you will need the loom & ECU

As for electric fuel pumps, Carb caddy's dont have them, k-jets have them next to the tank with the accumilator and Digifants have them internally, but you can fit an aftermaket pump for digifants (or Twin Carbs) if you prefer as no accumilator is needed

This engine was previously a GTi so all the bits and bobs are there.. I do know the fuel pump was removed but I dont know what it was replaced with..

I will look next to the tank and see what I can find. I am guessing if its not next to the tank, it will be in the tank.

I want to keep the electronics as simple as possible and not worried about tuning the carb so I think that is the root I will go for.

What do I do now with the fuel pump.

If its an internal one, how do I replace it with an external high flow job?

if its external, I guess I just plumb the new one in its place and I can get rid of the regulator?

What should I do with the return line? as the new setup wont have it?

Hi there the fuel pump your engine is using is located below the fuel accumalator (if you follow the fuel lines down from the accumalator) its bolted onto the front of the block.

As you can see from my other thread.. I have now had a change of plan and am fitting a G60 engine now.

What am I going to have to do to the fuel system to cope with this?

My engine does have a mechanical fuel pump below the fuel regulator..

Will it also have an electric pump in the tank?

what will I have to refit to get this to work? and where

Thanks Amit

Amit, still use the Gti fuel pump...it is easily up to the job and many have been used on the 20vt conversions....I am planning on using the 1.8 gti fuel pump for mine!

If you look at Al and Kevs VRs they chopped about their fuel tanks and added in tank pumps by fabricating the top and using a gasket but the GTi route will be something you can do yourself and Al has already answered those questions in this thread.

cool..

will have to source a gti fuel pump, accumulator and pipe work

Hi Amit....

You asked on the previous page if I had the 4 banch manifold but Paul has it in his Caddy now, sorry mate.

Al and I were talking about the G60 and he thought you could use the normal caddy rod box but I think yours is only 4 speed?

if 5 speed you could use it to make the conversion simple and then change the box if you break it...I sold my 5 speeder to Paul though.

I know the pain you are going through agonising over what to do and where to start...It gets easier once you start as things fall in to place...take your engine out ASAP as it makes you crack on then when you offer it up you can solve many problems.

If you need an engine hoist and you are not is a rush then you can borrow mine when I have finished....the rate that Al is working at we wont be needing it too much longer! might save you £200 buying one?

Toby.. if I could borrow the hoist that would be awesome!

Send al over with it while you are at it.. ;)

I currently have a 4spd box installed but have a 5spd in the garage.. to be honest.. I rather get the cable box in and do it right the first time.

Pay Al to do the Cable conversion as its wicked and didnt take him too long...that way he could bring his welder and my engine crane to you as soon as we have finished with it at mine....

Your plans sound good, quick queston re your original plan, if your originl engine was a gti what had been done to the injection ports???

They have been pluged with some machined up plugs.
