View Full Version : Caddy Sport

My name is James and I live in Devon. I have just brought my first caddy!!

It is a 1989/90 caddy sport, with 70,000 miles on the clock and loads of history. I have been told that they are quite hard to get hold of, is this true? Has anyone got a set of front coil overs?

Can anyone tell me how to insert pictures into the forum? If so I send some in.:D

Thats a nice clean looking sport you got there James[^] what a difference a different set of wheels make over the originals[8D]

Legend has it that there were only 250 Sports made, although I have seen nothing to confirm this, yes they are quite hard to come by so count yourself lucky;)

There must be about 10 Sport owners on this site now, maybe more!

Welcome BTW:)

welcome james,
now that is a clean clean caddy mate! :)
yip sports are getting pretty hard to get hold of and even harder to find in such good nick.
good work ;)

good god! very nice james!

Admin - you're right! What a difference a set of wheels make! I've never fancied a Sport 'til now!

James - what sort of cash did you pay for it? It's about the cleanest I've ever seen!

24-06-2004, 03:22 AM
Yeah, I wanted to know how much it was mate?
That is truly awesome, I want one of them, great wheels.
Coilovers - try calling ay uk "FK automotive distrubutor", they sell pairs.
Also - try Venom motorsport, I think they'll sort you out!!!
Cheers mate! Welcome aboard.

Wow - that looks a total minter ! Didn't know you could get them on a G plate. Wish mine was that clean. Mind you, if it was I wouldn't want to fill up the bed with all the gravel and bits of timber that's weighing mine down at the moment (am currently doing up an old house and using the Sport as a workhorse)

Looks low enough to me without coilovers. I reckon you'll be shredding tyres with those rims if you go much lower :)

I hope it was as expensive as it looks if only to make me feel better about how much I paid for mine ! Don't go telling us it only cost 500 or something, OK ?!?

As regards how many Sports were made, I remember reading an article in VW Motoring when they were launched. I'll have to dig it out and see if they mention production numbers, etc.

BTW - anyone know if you can still get the Sport decals (front and sides) from VW ???

All the best,

24-06-2004, 12:48 PM
Very nice can't be many left like that.:)

25-06-2004, 12:30 AM
It is as clean as it looks! And it was a steal, but i cant tell you how much, i might want to sell it one day!!! What do you guys think its worth?? Honestly??
The reason i need coil overs is because the chap who had it before me has sunk the springs by heating them, the rear srings have been re cambered and ive just modified the stub axles so they sit higher on the beam axle.
The arches dont fowl the wheels because ive had the kit off and flaired the arches, now im about to get hold of a rubber trim to go between the kit and the body, to make it look more original, then the kit will be repainted and i can sort out the rivets! (i hate them!)
I have a chap local to me who can take a mould from my graphics and sell em to you guys if you want?? he is a pro signwriter so would do a top notch job and should be cheap!!
I was going to completly re spray the cad in white with a pearl flip, but now knowing how rare the are in this condition ive just changed my mind!!
Driving it around is weird cos people dont have a clue what it is! which is great for me because ive just started my own garage, specializing in modifications, so its a great advert for my business, if not all that practical cos i cant put anything in the back, cos it would scratch it!!
Speak soon!!

The side decals are still available from VAG.

25-06-2004, 03:57 AM
Is that your new ride Lee? The blue mk1?

25-06-2004, 07:57 AM
lesterone, do you know how much vag wants for the side decals? they would look cool on my "finished" caddy

25-06-2004, 04:12 PM
that is awesome. good find/buy!!!

25-06-2004, 10:30 PM
Nice clean truck!

You guys over the pond get all the good stuff...

26-06-2004, 01:43 AM
You wouldnt of liked it when we found it.[:p]
On the bottom of a long driveway covered in algae, been stood for a couple of years we reckon, but a service and T cut and shes a minter!:D

26-06-2004, 03:05 AM
OOooooo. I like. The wheels do make all the difference. Lester, that your new project, that blue mk1? Keep up the good work fellas.

26-06-2004, 03:34 AM
James, that is a very nice sport you bought......just a pity you won't reveal what you got it for, so your fellow forum brothers and sisters could share in all the information about it, as I assumed that was why you posted it in the forum in the first place.Especialy since you didn't even seem to be too clued up on them.

Hope you keep it in a good condition

mind teling us about your garage or company then ?

26-06-2004, 03:08 PM
Ok it was 1850. Happy Now!!!!!

26-06-2004, 03:10 PM
NO! Not happy at all!!

26-06-2004, 03:29 PM
yer nice sport mate has it had anythink done to the engine

27-06-2004, 03:09 AM
All completely standard at the momment, but have a few plans!!! 20v Turbo[8D] anybody?

I am a bit scared to touch it too much as they are so rare in this condition. What do you guys reckon it is worth? What should I have paid?[}:)]

27-06-2004, 06:26 AM
James, yeah, I'm a happy bunny now mate....lol , especially now I know that you got it at a good price. Makes me think that I will find one too !

I would keep it standard, as it would be worth more to a potential buyer if you were really comtemplating selling it in the future. You never tend to fully recoop the money you spend on fancy mods, as it may not appeal to everyones taste. Thats just my opinion, mind you

Plus, it's not a bad mover in its original spec.......sure beats the 1.6 petrol on carbs and the diesels ( speed wise )

28-06-2004, 12:28 AM
My business has been running now for about 6 months, and at the moment there isnt enough hours in the day.[:0]
we do everything from a bulb to a bare shell rebuild, modification specialists, not scared of anything! want 20"s on your caddy?? Bodykit fitting, flush tailgates, de handling, remote door/boot opening, produce and fit roll cages, I fit Thatcham approved alarm systems and trackers.[}:)]
Basically anything, and if you cant buy what you want, i can either manufacture it myself or know people who can!:D
At the moment as ive only just started i work on my own in the workshop, but if things carry on like they are i wont be able to cope!! (p.s the woman helps me out to- have to say it or she will moan that i take all the credit!!)

28-06-2004, 12:43 AM
thats awesome james, thats like a dream job that i've had. good s**t!

28-06-2004, 01:35 AM
what sort of exhausts do you guys reckon i should fit? Needs to be a tad louder!!

28-06-2004, 04:40 AM
Mines well loud! it was straight through to a DTM exiting in front of the passenger side rear wheel. Had to put in a centre silencer as it was too loud, it's still very loud & the side exit is great for setting car alarms off! I'm investing in a 4 into 1 manifold as mine's "cobbled together" i'm getting an Ashley one for around 210, they make it the right shape for the 16v conversion.

28-06-2004, 05:18 AM
James, I am very pleased for you mate...that is more than a dream job and winning the lottery all in one....where abouts are you located ?

Did you say you can get parts machined or manufactured ?.....I'm a VW Diesel head mate and I got a few rear wheel drive classics that I am restoring. I am trying to find an engineering shop or machinist, who can build an adopter plate to fit (a) a MK2 Golf 1.6 TD engine, (b) a MK3 VW Golf 1.9 TDi, mated to a Ford Sierra Diesel 5 speed box. Or if you know of a company that build me a bell housing instead.

Wish you all the very best with your business and don't forget to hug the misses mate

28-06-2004, 05:02 PM
We are located in Newton Abbot, Devon. I will look into the adapter plate.

02-09-2004, 03:19 AM
ok now the engine has gone tits up!!!!!!!!!

02-09-2004, 07:02 PM
Very nice ride James.
